You may not believe this, but before last night, I had never actually set foot inside Bi-Rite Market. Now I have. I see why people get all misty-eyed about having it in their neighborhood. It was a little crowded, so I tried not to linger. Also, I had eaten already. But our hasty moments spent together were a small delight.

I don't think we have one in our area. Tell me about them. I wonder if they are anything like whole foods.

Bi-Rite is a very small neighborhood gourmet market, local to the Mission District of SF. Since many of my friends live in the Mission, and the store is just around the corner from one of the big parks in San Francisco, Bi Rite gets a lot of traffic from people I know. Still, somehow in all this time I'd never made it inside.

What is great about Bi-Rite? I have no knowledge of this phenomenon, other than their ice cream shop near Dolores Park.

Down the block on the other side of the street from the ice cream shop, there's a little upscale market. Emphasis on "little." I hear it's got a great wine section, but I don't drink wine. It had a nice meat case, too, and I had fantasies of impromptu Dolores Park grills.

I don't think it's somewhere I'd make an out-of-the-way trip for, but it's something I wish every neighborhood had, if that makes sense.
