Apocalyptic

Red dawns and red dusks. In the morning, the air smells of ash.
I take the train to work and get off in a neighborhood full of low-rise office buildings and nothing else. Half of them are vacant. There are no sidewalks, so I walk in the street.
Already, this type of building pattern seems archaic and wasteful. So many parking lots. So much sprawl. All the marks of an era when gas and land were seen as inexhaustible. Was it such a short time ago?
The air doesn't smell of ash here, yet. But the sky is still red.
