Re: baby items:

If it doesn't come in pastel pink or baby blue, it comes in sage green. And only sage green. OK, sometimes yellow. Rarely, if you're lucky, lavender. Or if it's expensive and "eco-friendly" or organic, it might come in "neutral," i.e. off-white.

At this point I think I would kill for something in a royal purple.

ETA: b/c I already have two boxfuls of clothing and more coming, I am thinking more about blankets, towels/washcloths, bedding, and decor, in my specific case (i.e. when I am not whining about the state of baby stuff in general). I mean, do I really need a gender-coded *washcloth*?

I bought white cotton onesies and tops/pants at Dharma Trading Company's website and dyed them black for a friend in Denver (put rock and roll patches on them too). Some have thread that will dye, some don't, but all are just great.

Muahahahaha That's what royal purple non-toxic dye is for. =)

Hanna Andersson does brighter colors. Not cheap, but lasts forever (often lasted through all 6 of us kids in my family).

I think bedazzling is pretty gender neutral. Maybe royal purple with a little sparkle? ;)

And this is why I made my kids tie dye clothing cause the baby stuff was so limited. :)

though I would color in bits of the tie to make it ska two-tone checkerboard...

Bright red is nice too and not impossible to find!

My sister posted about a bunch of kick ass baby blankets that she made, with cowgirls and rocketships and stuff, in bright colors, take a look! she was selling them at BlogHer and I think there are some left...

I am full of Opinions today. ONly because I had similar qualms and annoyed reaction to the baby Junk out there and its horrible gendered pastelitude.

When i bought stuff I went for animal themes. That worked out well with lots of fun leopard print stuff - blankets and such - a brown and white zoo-animals fabric-covered small foam couch that folds out into a little bed still useful and not embarrassing to older kids.

The whole truck/train thing as a theme makes me barf, so I avoided it.

OK, here is where I am compelled to confess that as the white mom-to-be of interracial kids, I am also trying to avoid jungle/zoo themes as much as possible :P My hang-up.

It's a good thing I like frogs! (And turtles, and farm animals, and insects and DINOSAURS!)

Insects and dinos totally rule! I did not think about race and "jungle" theme prints. Hmmmm.

There will be dark purple hand-me-down pants in your future.

Also, should you dare, a cow-print long romper with a little cowette (its too adult-looking to actually be a calf) in its little front pocket. Someone really didn't know me and my cow phobia aversion when they gave me that gift!

My apartment feels so less cluttered after you took all that stuff. I'm looking around now trying to figure out what else you might want soon. I have a single snap-n-go (that for some reason has a double logo, but it ain't no double), but that probably won't do you any good, will it?

Nope, I don't think I can use a single snap-n-go. Too bad.

In the days when I knitted baby clothes for people's forthcoming offspring (and for that matter, still had the patterns), which were also the days when it wasn't generally known what sex the baby was likely to be beforehand, I enjoyed knitting in wild colours. Sadly, the parents did not always 'get' it, which was a pity.

Maybe I should go back to knitting baby clothes in wild colours?
