My first-ever "business card" arrived today. With my tiny sun-emerging-from-eclipse "logo" graphic that I digitally manipulated from a real photo, all by myself.

It's glossy, too. (I couldn't figure out how to order it in color with no gloss, and glossy was free.)

It's not really a business card -- it's midway between that and a trick card. I promised myself I would never, ever, ever get a card that said something like "freelance writer/editor" because I think they're cheesy and wannabe. But it's nice to have something with my phone number and email (and PO Box) on hand to hand out to people when the occasion calls for it. I can't count how many times in the past few years I've been asked if I have a card, and I've had to say no.

It also reminds me of the huge struggle I had at OOB to get a business card. They refused at first, saying they weren't sure I was "committed to the position" (presumably a reference to being part-time and freelancing on the side). Really, they were being cheapskates; the insult was just incidental.

I'm alternating between feeling silly and proud.

Way back when, I had business cards that said, "writer, smartass, pervert". I was rather fond of them.

Business cards are great.

They sometimes have these machines in the subway in Madrid which'll print up 60 business cards for what was then 500 ptas ($3?). I used to make up some that were professional, with my full name, address and telephone, but then others for tricking with just my first name and cell phone. :-)

But they're really useful to have, and I find that it helps to enclose a business card with a mailing if you want someone to call you back, this way they have your number handy.

I also love getting business cards from people, I store them in the boxes my business cards came in and divide them into categories.

At trade shows and things, business cards are really useful to write on the backs something--where you met the person, why they gave you a card or what you talked about, if you promised to send them something, etc.

Otherwise, after a few days of BEA or something and I have no idea who I am anymore, let alone anyone else...
