For the record, I am mostly neutral and totally not invested in the EvelynEvelyn discussion. But if the defenders of the project don't start acknowledging that, actually, the relationship between producer and musical artist is absolutely fraught with problematic power dynamics -- and therefore saying "but that's what producers do" is not really a valid exculpatory argument -- I am going to scream.

Did I miss something? Because I thought the musical artist(s) and the producer(s) of that project were one and the same.

They are one and the same. But in the promotional story materials, Webley and Palmer present themselves as the discoverers and producers of (the fictional) Evelyn and Evelyn. The argument is basically whether or not that plays into icky tropes about disabled people being exploited by able-bodied folks. Defenders are saying "no, that's just what producers do!" and I'm saying, "Hold it right there..." and wanting to point to, I dunno, Motown and J Records and anybody who's ever used the term "Svengali" in this context, really.
