Dear Amy Lee,

I just wanted you to know that, when you wear your black leather corset like that, what it says to me is not "I am a dark, moody, melodramatic, yet strangely sexy and compelling Christian lite pseudo-goth." What it says is, "I have no fucking idea how to lace up a corset, so I tightened it across my boobs and left it gapping at the waist. I dunno. It looked cool on eBay."

There actually ARE corsets for those of us who are carefully (or very casually, hands in pockets, whistling at the ceiling) not displaying boobs. I saw one on a local boy, and it looked so fabulous I had to inquire where he got it. (www.theotherwomanwear.com One of the menswear vests.) I was induced to try one on at a fleamarket, and it was, indeed, very flattering. Even though the saleswoman had to keep telling me to take my hands out of my pockets and stand up straight. I think you have to lace it differently from a regular corset, but my experience is limited. I didn't buy it. I have better things to do with that kind of money, as you might expect.

There are many, many different styles of corsets, some of which indeed smoosh boobs flat. This might have even been one of them, though it is hard to tell because of the haphazard way she is wearing it. Tight across the chest is fine; tight across the chest and hanging loose at the waist is wrong. Just wrong.

Maybe I'll scan the pic.

I confess to blowing my very first freelance paycheck on a corset. The company that paid me such big bucks went out of business the next month, of course.
