Remind me at some point to expound upon the Piedmont Parent. Piedmont is a little autonomous [rich, white] enclave in the heart of Oakland, just next door to where I live. The Piedmont Parent is, I believe, a close cousin to the better-known Park Slope Parent, especially in the realm of conspicuous consumption. They also tend to eschew the touchy-feely passive-aggressive "can't we all just get along by following my standards" Berkeleyspeak for straight-up consumer entitlement. Unlike the Berkeley Parent, I am in no danger at all of becoming a Piedmont Parent, despite geographic proximity. Nonetheless, I am trying to fine-tune my stereotypical portrait for my faithful readers. Do feel free to ask questions or add your own impressions. I only wish I could recall better the conversation I overheard from two parents-to-be at my pediatrician's open house, which I now only remember made me nod knowingly when they started comparing their favorite Piedmont restaurants while simultaneously complaining about their service.

Do Piedmont Parents bitch about "illegal aliens" while simultaneously engaging immigrant nannies, or are they not quite that well off?

What does a Piedmont Parent drive?

Those are Orinda Parents, bitching about "illegals" and (trying to) vote hardline Republican while engaging immigrant nannies. Piedmont is the reason why "limousine liberal" is a term of disapprobation.

[livejournal.com profile] trinker nailed it. Piedmont parents send their kids to Mandarin classes and consider themselves worldly for hiring "illegal immigrants" as nannies.

I'll have to make note of what they drive.

(edited b/c I forgot my scoff quotes. Piedmont parents do not have the word 'undocumented' in their vocabulary.)

My partner reports, btw, that there is a preponderance of BMW SUVs in Piedmont.

I can not own to knowing much about Piedmont parents, though I always thought their behavior on Piedmont St (where I do partake of many yummy & cheap restaurants) was due to the narrow sidewalks...

And - HI! Haven't seen you since pre-babies but just checked in on LJ to see how you all are doing. :)

Heya!

Piedmont Street is a crossroads for a bunch of communities, esp. with Kaiser so nearby. *I'm* sometimes one of the parents trying to negotiate those narrow sidewalks :)
