My doula, due to her familial association with a certain role-playing game publisher, gave the family a plush Cthulhu doll as a birth gift. Today April plucked it from the shelf.

"Oh, a spider!" she said.

I corrected her gently. "Actually, that's not really a spider. His name is Cthulhu."

She frowned in concentration and looked into the plushie's eyes.

"Tofu," she pronounced.

Oh, well that explains something from Saturday night. At 9 pm sharp, April was ready for bed, and she asked me to carry her to bed and get her milk. She also pointed up at the bookshelves and asked for the spider. I didn't understand what she meant by that, so I picked up a few different things on the shelf and asked "Is this the one you wanted?", but none of them were. I didn't get to the Cthulhu because after a minute, Simone started asking me to pick her up and carry her to bed too. So then we just went to bed, with April's request for a spider unanswered.
