rantlet*, Almost Famous version
Jan. 31st, 2011 01:26 pmOK, I have had it with all these microcelebrity authors whinging about how folks have an "authorial construct"** of them that's all made up of marshmallow fluff and boo hoo they have to engage with these folks and their strange shadow-authors, oh woe the price of fame...
...because I have a few ClueBats I'd like to deliver.
ClueBat #1: No author whose fans think they're the Nicest Person Ever whinges [publicly] like this. Trufax. It's really transparent in this go-round in particular how this is a substitute for saying "people think I'm a big meanie ever since *Fail and I'm trying to intellectualize my hurt fee-fees."
ClueBat #2: Guess what? You don't have to be a Famous, famous, or even microfamous author, reality TV star, or bonafide celebrity for this process to happen. Really, trust me and ask me how I know, all you have to do is be outspoken about something. Or just clever and engaging and witty. Or have cool hair and/or boots and/or tattoos.
ClueBat #3: In fact, a good portion of certain discussions around Fail issues has been exactly how this happens to, oh, the marginalized but not silenced peoples of the world, like fans of color who are Big Meanies Looking For Notoriety or Troublemakers Stirring the Pot or etc. etc. etc. This is called Othering. Yup. Go cry in Simone de Beauvoir's beer already. And then check yourself, eh?
Or, in other words:
I suppose it would be gauche of me to send a little "welcome to the club" card, eh? :P:P:P
I mean yes, of course people project their dreams and desires and little fantasy stories all over people of various levels of fame. That's why we have RPF. And yes of course some people have a really hard time distinguishing between those fantasies and reality. And yes, even regardless of those people, there's another good chunk of folks that tend to react with feelings ranging from disappointment to anger when you fail for whatever reason to live up to the image they have constructed of you. But I think it involves just a teensy bit of misplaced arrogance to assume that this is about fame per se rather than simple human psychology -- heck, ask any couples counselor about this one!
Sheesh.
