What's the last thing you ate?
Two pieces of potato bread smeared with creamy peanut butter. If you had asked yesterday, it would have been two pieces of Acme cinnamon bread with butter, and Ceylon Breakfast tea, but I felt lazy today.
What's your favorite cheese?
Only one? How terrible!
gordonzola asked me this a while back, actually. My favorite everyday cheese is still chevre. I also like five-year Wisconsin cheddars a lot.
What's your favorite fish?
I'm not a big fish eater, but I adore fresh sardines.
What's your favorite fruit?
I don't know.
imnotandrei suggests rambutan, which is terribly exotic, which is why I am letting him make the suggestion instead of me. Charentais melon is hardly less exotic, but it leaps to mind, too. Wild strawberries, ditto.
When, if ever, did you start liking olives?
Just a couple years ago. Dunno what happened.
When, if ever, did you start liking beer?
Sometime shortly after I tasted a non-American, dark wheat beer.
When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?
I have always liked shellfish.
What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make?
Roast turkey with stuffing and gravy.
What's the native specialty of your home town?
East Lansing does not have a native specialty.
What's your comfort food?
Rice pudding. Which is weird, because I did not grow up with it.
What's your favorite type of chocolate?
I'm not a big fan of choclate [gasp!]. When I do eat it, I prefer it bittersweet, and not part of a dessert concoction.
How do you like your steak?
I'm not a big fan of steak, either. Rare, with some flavorful sauce.
How do you like your burger?
Medium. With ketchup.
How do you like your eggs?
Sunny side up.
How do you like your potatoes?
Pan-fried with duck fat.
How do you take your coffee?
I don't drink coffee.
How do you take your tea?
This varies tremendously depending on the time of day, what if any I am eating with it, and my mood. Green or black, with sugar or without, with milk or without -- I'll drink it all.
What's your favorite mug?
My favorite mug is broken -- it was a gift from my former boss at OOB, and it read "Overworked, Underpaid, Oversexed, Underlaid." It really summed up our year together on the magazine.
What's your biscuit or cookie of choice?
I don't know any more. Lots of things come to mind, but nothing really compels.
What's your ideal breakfast?
German-style continental, with cold cuts, sliced cheese, yogurt, fruit, breads both sweet and savory, and tea. Prepared by someone else, please.
What's your ideal sandwich?
Falafel on a bun, with one of those fluorescent sauces that seem to only be found in Turkish joints in Germany. Well, that's my ideal of the moment, at least. Ask me tomorrow and I'll give you a different answer.
What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)?
I'm not a big pizza fan. Too heavy for me. I think I prefer many different variations on foccacia instead. I love foccacia with toppings -- olives, tomato sauce, garlic, whatever.
I also like pissaladiere a lot.
What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?
My mother's apple pie.
What's your ideal salad?
I have no ideal salad. I love salad, but I like variation too. Right now I am craving red leaf lettuce, goat cheese, a balsamic dressing, and pine nuts.
What food do you always like to have in the fridge?
Cheese, olives, yogurt, eggs.
What food do you always like to have in the freezer?
Homemade chicken stock. Various nuts.
What food do you always like to have in the cupboard?
Olive oil.
What spices can you not live without?
Black pepper.
What sauces can you not live without?
I can live without most if not all sauces, but I like having mustard and ketchup and mayonnaise around.
Where do you buy most of your food?
Most of my veggies come from Terra Firma Farm. After that, I pick up other staples wherever it might be convenient.
How often do you go food shopping?
Once a week. I'd go more often if the schedule permitted.
What's the most you've spent on a single food item?
I don't know. Under $50, I suspect.
What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own (excluding 'white goods')?
My KitchenAid mixer.
What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen?
Probably a spice rack.
What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without?
A sharp knife.
How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients?
3-4 times a week. (I'm interpreting "from raw ingredients" to mean the equivalent of "from scratch.")
What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients?
Those short ribs I described a few posts ago.
What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig and poultry?
"Poultry" is so broad! I don't get to count goose, pheasant, guinea hen? Hmf. I've eaten lamb, and goat. I think that's it. Oh, and frog.
What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor?
I don't remember.
What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild?
Probably the last time I was at my parent's house in the summer -- they have a small patch of wild strawberries along the edge of the house.
(I skipped all the 'place in order of preference' questions because they all depend on my mood.)
