I noticed something today about the common shared narrative of the many, many urban myths floating around about Sesame Street's content choices. You know the ones: Cookie Monster no longer eats cookies. They don't show "Monsterpiece Theatre" any more b/c of the pipe smoking. Katy Perry's boobs. And so on.

It's this: there appears to be a collective need to have a narrative where the show caves in a ridiculously overcompensatory manner to the demands of political correctness.

I don't know, but it's a persistent enough rumor to have made Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/veggie.asp).

The skit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY8jr_qdQLs) (quoted at the link) where Cookie Monster addresses the rumors is pretty darn hilarious.

It wasn't that I had heard that he didn't eat them at all, just that he no longer ate them primarily. That whole "sometimes food" thing. That they took away his sort of walking id personality by giving him a sense of balance and moderation to his diet.

Though I suppose that boils down to the same thing, perhaps.

He's definitely still sort of a walking id. Just with a broader palate.
