From my reading, it wasn't a downpayment. It was the fifty grand for the house. At least, the house cost fifty grand, he received fifty grand, and right now he has zero and hasn't had anything for more than a decade.
Inheriting the house your parents or grandparents paid a mortgage on for 30 years is NOT THE SAME as inheriting $50,000, because if they had $50,000 to leave you (and $50,000 to leave to each of your two siblings!), they clearly had lots of disposable income to save or play the stock market, which most working- and middle-class people don't. (And most middle-class people are working class, goddammit.)
Ruling class puppet. I only had two years at one of the schools that colluded with the Ivies in fixing tuition before the financial aid bait-and-switch kicked in.
My inheritance from my recently deceased mother in law consisted of 60 bucks and her cd collection and some paints. My uncle died, and it took my family 4 months to come up with the money to cremate his body. that's what poor people leave each other when they die. Debt and debris.
heh. we sold all the ones that still had jewel cases, and got an extra 35 out of it. We were rolling in it.
Oh, we got her 100 dollar stereo too in the interest of full disclosure. So with all that our inheritance from her was almost 200 bucks. Not quite enough to send a kid to college and buy a ittle blue collar house.
What's all this? A rant against people who inherit a lot of money? (I'm not one!) But if they did, I guess a house is a good place to start.
When my grandma died, I got enough to pay off my credit card debt, which is to say about $3K. And all her photos. And her ashes, which were about to be put in the dumpster because my uncle was too confused and in shock to say what to do with them.
This is a rant against well-known Internet pests who claim to be middle class at best, when they in fact inherited enough $ to buy a house outright plus get sent to prep school. It's the disingenuousness, not the inheritance per se, that's the problem and I just needed to vent a bit. (I know this post was kinda obscure to people who haven't encountered said pest in the first place.)
I see. Sorry to jump in with my cluelessness then :) I followed the link above, but it was fraught with personal histories I know not of. I do remember that Shetterley guy's name from previous drama and stay well away.
I suspect the only value my inheritances will have is sentimental.
In some ways, this reminds me of my ex-boss who, when he heard me mention that I couldn't afford to explore the more expensive tests in an attempt to track down the cause of my migraines, asked, "Can't you borrow the money from your parents?" I don't know what made him think my parents can afford to pay for CAT Scans out-of-pocket, but when I replied, "No," he looked confused.
