Teenage girl, being raised by a single dad, lives by the sea and loves to/longs to surf. Discovers through a series of circumstances that her mother isn't dead/absent, she's a mermaid! And our suddenly special girl, who has always felt out of place (a fish out of water? Har har!) must choose between the land, or the sea. What will her destiny be?

Well, if you don't like her choice in one YA book, there are half a dozen more to choose from where things might work out differently! Or not.

Oh dear.

Through a series of unfortunate events (well just one really - went to Guerneville for a weekend with friends and forgot to pack any books!!!) I was recently forced to read a YA book about a teenage girl adoptee who discovers through a series of circumstances that her long-lost twin sister is a vampire! And our suddenly special girl, who has always fit in just fine in high school, must choose between the humans and the vampires. What will her destiny be?

This sounds... almost worse.

Though I will say that the scene in which a vampire fashion magazine came to do a photo shoot of the twins, which was like some hellish combination of the Pretty Woman shopping sequences plus a sanitized version of America's Next Top Model, had me clutching at myself thinking that possibly feminism is dead because it fell into despair and swallowed its own tongue out of desperation.

Well, if it helps, as a rule these girls are tomboys. Because they love to (or want to but aren't allowed to) surf, dontcha know.

On the other hand, there's this (http://www.amazon.com/Survival-Guide-Landlocked-Mermaids/dp/1582701601/ref=pd_ys_ir_all_65). (Carly Simon liked it!)

.... GAHHHHHHH

I guess this means I am indefinitely putting off the mermaid tattoo I've had planned for several years now, if they're going to be trendy for the forseeable.

Personally I believe in ignoring trends. It'll pass.

Jesus, this makes me want to write a YA about a teenage girl being raised by a single dad (note: this was my experience and I can tell you it is not necessarily fun, but not necessarily un-fun in the way that YA books portray it) living by the ocean who thinks she's a mermaid.

And then she gets the appropriate treatment for her psychological/neurological/cognitive issues, learns to surf, and has a fun time. Also, hot sex with a fellow lady surfer.

She never noticed that she didn't have legs?

Was her mother Judy Merrill?

She only had one leg; she was half-mermaid, you see.
