1. I just saw a "Steampunk Sourcebook" from Dover Press, and suddenly it occurred to me that Freddie Baer should be all the rage these days, if the universe was fair. It's not, but I'm going to dream anyhow.

2. Health is improving significantly since advent of antibiotics and other exciting drugs (I have a nasal spray and an inhaler too!). I may even be able to read stories to my kids again soon. And taste my dinner!

3. My father made a strange and intriguing remark about how my children seem to respond better to verbal direction than he'd expect. It's true, I talk 'em to death into complicity. But I also gave credit to Simone's need for order. Give her structure and she's happy.

4. My sister (a.k.a A Certain Aunt) confessed that she tried to find the least-pink My Little Ponies to give to my daughters for Xmas, but she couldn't find them. She gets an A for effort.

5. I need some new fiction recommendations.

I suddenly pictured you making a funny-serious face and saying "GOOD things."

I'm trying to think of something specially good and structurally complicated while still "easily" readable. You might like Who Fears Death (it is quite intense!) Top of my list for recs for people who want "Good Food".

I did think a while back you would like Arrogant Beggar by Anzia Yezierska (not complicated, but awesome and historical feeling). So would S. I think for its revolutionaryness. But I love it beyond reason for the bit where the heroine gives her speech before the society of charitable ladies. OMFG.

The Geek Mafia books were pretty amusing (not complicated either)

Have you read Cold Magic and Cold Fire? (Or were those ones that didn't grab you? )

House of Suns is my favorite Alistair Reynolds book but his others are also interesting.

You might like Redwood and Wildfire because it's extremely good, but I can't tell if it is the sort of thing that you would like or bounce off of. It isn't dense-as-all-getout like Mindscape is but it also doesn't exactly slip down like custard. I have it and Who Fears but they're on the boat and I can't drive right now...
