my mouth, the soap opera
Jan. 24th, 2012 09:43 pmGum grafts are a very weird thing. Moving soft tissue from one spot in my mouth to the other -- weird! Protective palate plates -- weird! Hard bandage glue to protect the new graft -- weird! The zone between medically necessary procedures and vanity that all my dental work seems to reside in (crowns, braces...) -- weird! This was a "please don't lose this tooth in 10 years" graft, if you're curious. I remain pain-phobic and of solid body image enough that I cannot imagine going through this sort of thing purely for cosmetic purposes.
Watching Analyze This during the procedure probably didn't help in the weirdness department, btw.
An hour after the procedure I was super-pissed that all I had to take was Advil because hello throbbing pain. Then I took a four-hour nap. Suddenly my pain was manageable. I can take a hint.
And then my dentist called to check in on me. D'aw.
Anyway, I am fine, if confined to eating non-pointy food (crusty bread, nuts) and lukewarm or colder food (no tea?!) for a week. I hate eating with the palate protector in, but that's exactly what it's for, so I guess I'll get used to it.
