Cheese Confection Doom

pantryslutAs part of the research I'm doing for a for-pay little article, I happened to discover last night that the Michigan State University Dairy Store now sells its products online.
Fortunately for me, it does not ship its ice cream. (I remember the days when they only had four flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Black Cherry [b/c Michigan, natch]. Now they have a flavor for each of the Big Ten Conference teams, plus a few more like Blue Moon and something concocted in honor of the football coach.)
Unfortunately for me, it does ship its "chocolate cheese confection."
Chocolate Cheese tastes like fudge only firmer and less sweet. It is one of those things that is just so wrong that it's right. I really, really want to write a whole feature article about it someday for somewhere. Chocolate cheese. I know I am losing all hoity-toity gourmet points here by confessing my fondness for it. So be it.
The Dairy Store in general hits my nostalgia buttons hard. It is no secret that I spent several summers of my childhood hanging out at loose ends on the MSU campus while my mother pursued her PhD. in Engineering. The Engineering Building was right next door to Anthony Hall, where the Dairy Store was located, so at least once a week my mother and I would walk over and get ourselves an ice cream cone during those hot, hot Michigan summers. The cones were cheap and huge. This is the first place I had soft serve -- chocolate, or vanilla, or swirl? Swirl!
And then in high school, I did a schmancy summer science research program with a professor right in Anthony Hall (toxicology department, on the effect of delayed neurotoxins in immature chickens, but that's another story), and the whole department went over almost every day to the Dairy Store for ice cream. It was then that I first tried chocolate cheese, at an office birthday party if I recall.
(Also another story: the very office I worked in was firebombed by animal rights activists just a few years later. I'm still testy about it.)
I'm going back to East Lansing late in the summer. I will try to hold out until then.
