This morning I cleared my moviegoing palate from the strange aftertaste of last night with a stellar documentary. Strong! is about Cheryl Haworth, the women's weightlifting bronze medal winner in Sydney. It basically follows the winding down of her career as an Olympic athlete and facing what comes afterwards for a woman with a, well, stigmatized body type. Haworth and her cute! fiancee were at the Q&A afterwards, which was neat and a surprise, as her sexuality is left ambiguous onscreen (possibly because she hadn't sorted it out herself, note).
Haworth both on-screen and off is full of charm, and the documentary is very artful. You learn a lot about Olympic-style lifting, get to see it in slow motion on a range of women's bodies. And you also get to see Haworth's highly accomplished drawing skills in action (she has a degree in Fine Arts).
Strong! will be airing on PBS in July -- the link above has the info.
