This morning, not only was it cold, not only was the bus late, but a significant portion of our ride to school was taken up by a conversation about some hi-larious YouTube video in which a woman gets clocked by a man. "Upper cut! I never seen a woman get hit so hard!" I eventually started a loud and pointed conversation about cupcakes and sprinkles just to distract the kids and me both from having to listen to any more.

At school, a clutch of parents were tsk-tsking the disturbing slang their kids were echoing ("I'd kill myself if I lost my iPhone") and wondering where on earth they overhear such things. And I thought to myself, "I can tell all of y'all drive cars."

Traditionally one learned disturbing slang on the playground during recess; public transit was where you learned politics.

Distraction is good, and eventually aural blocking will have to be learned and deployed. My sympathies.
