1. My check from Asimov's arrived yesterday! Whee! Now I can a) afford to go to Chicago in July and b) afford to go out to dinner and celebrate :)

I still have no indication of when the story will see print. I'll let y'all know when I know.

2. Today is Father's Day, so I did my family duty and called home. Saturday was also my parents' anniversary, so it was a double occasion. (I forgot about the anniversary part. My excuse, happily accepted, was that I wasn't there at the time.)

My brother, who was in town for a job interview, decided that his Father's Day present to my dad would be to get the speedometer fixed on the Chrysler. So he took it in to the dealer on Saturday. Ten minutes after he got home, he got a call. Good news and bad news: the dealer had already fixed the speedometer, and it was fine. But in test-driving the car to check this, they had run the car into a utility pole.

So of course they would fix it free of charge, and in the meantime rent a car for my dad at their expense.

Dad went to the rental place, where all the paperwork was already in order. But the rental folks sheepishly admitted they only had one car left to rent. Actually, it wasn't a car. It was a Chrysler pick-up, extended cab, with, yes, the vaunted hemi engine under the hood. Bright red. (The exterior, not the engine.)

So after some fun driving around on the highway and parking in the far corners of lots because the damn thing was too big to maneuver, my Dad took it home. When Mom saw it, she got a bright idea. Pickup bed means lots of space to haul stuff. Stuff like home improvement materials.

My mother has now spent most of the weekend redoing the kitchen floor, from carpet (over tile, long story) to Pergo. She's also making custom baseboards with the miter saw that she purchased yesterday. Consensus is that they are gorgeous boards that I must come and admire next time I have a chance to make it out to Michigan.

Wow, you sold a story to Asimov's! NO way! Congrats! You totally insanely rule!

It is absolutely the straightest story I have ever written, too. But I still like it.
