Jun. 25th, 2004 11:29 amLook! I suffer from transcendent wisdom!
I think Charlie is referring to the year in which I worked in my garden instead of attending Pride. I remember getting a phone call from friends in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday. They were at the dyke march, they were drunk with heat and female pheromones and completely babbling, and it was almost like being there.
This year I have no garden, thus no excuse. I still may skip big portions of the weekend. It's not that I'm jaded or strung out, it's that I'm congenitally exhausted. I've been going to pride marches since I was 20, at least. I have strong ties to the queer press. I've sold magazines in the rain, camped out in pride tents in cities I'd never been to before (and cities I've lived in for years). I've sat on a Grand Marshall's float. I've carried the dyke march banner (and thus ogled the go-go-girls for the length of the walk).
And I'm proud every fucking day of my life. Rainbows or no rainbows, march or no march. But sometimes I like to consider myself retired -- may I never be required to work a booth on a weekend in June ever again!
