(no subject)

Once, a long time ago, I wrote an article about the crossover between hip-hop and porn, and its natural nexus, the image of the pimp. This article never got published due to a variety of outside factors. But it's a subject, due to my triple roles as music reviewer, porn reviewer, and feminist type person, that I keep a close eye on even now.

So of course I had a jumbled set of feelings when "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" won the Oscar. And even moreso about some of the (mostly knee-jerk) commentary that followed.

As usual, Oliver Wang of Poplicks fame does a pretty cracking job of sorting some of it out for me. Don't miss the Washington Post essay he links to, either.

Also, I am embarrassed to admit what I accidentally left in the middle drawer of the desk I abandoned in the old place. My former apartment manager recovered it all and it is waiting in a plastic bag for me to pick up tomorrow.

What does the phrase "dinner party" conjure up in your mind?

When one-third of you hear "dinner party" and think "Judy Chicago," I must be doing something right.

three other thoughts on the dinner party

1) I think I like little foods more than big foods, and so a cocktail-style party with scrumptious nibbles is more my speed.

2) Also, I am bashful. I like to be the facilitator of a good time at parties, but not so much the central focus. Please don't focus on my food or the me that made the food. Just eat and enjoy.

3) Also also, I don't mind if people hang around while I cook. I get the sense that's all supposed to happen off-stage at a dinner party.
