In college, I took a class in "Popular Culture." It was taught by a
graduate student in the English department, a woman who happened to have
been a clerk at the comic shop that I patronized when I was a teenager.
She was also a Kirk/Spock slash writer. But all of that's another story.
She instructed me to always call it "popular culture" and never shorten it
to "pop culture," because the Big Professor On Campus hated the short
version. Hayted it. H-A-T-E. Despised it in a way that only pretentious
academics can.
I think she was half right.
I think the proper short form is not "pop culture," but "popular cult."
