This hot weather has really been messing around with both my appetite and my taste buds. Last night, all I wanted to eat -- and what I really, really longed to eat -- was pickled herring and sliced apple on squares of thin pumpernickel bread. So that's what we did. (The boy had ham, cheddar, and chutney on a hard roll.)

I'm afraid it's far from revolting -- the herring is sweet and chewy, the apple is tart and crisp, and the pumpernickel adds an earthy note. Delicious.

There's actually a traditionalish salad made of pickled herring, green apples, and other things that I really like -- this was my lazy way of approximating its tastes.

I think that the taste for herring must be some genetic link. My father loves "smelly fish products" of all sorts. As a kid, I thought he was insane. But now look at me.

mmm, yum, smelly fish.

which reminds me of something I read on some sex blog recently (which I shouldn't look up right now since I'm at work, but here's the link anyway) about a naked sushi contest where the judges made cheesy comments like "it tasted just like fish!" and amused themselves greatly while eating the tuna sashimi from between a woman's legs...
