I recommend having a relative who's obsessed with genaology. I know tons about my mother's side of the family, thanks to grandma; i know almost nothing about my father's side, because they just don't care very much.

I stumbled across articles on how John Kerry and George W. Bush are 10th cousins or thereabout. The professional genealogists point out that almost anybody with Puritan New England ancestors will have that degree of relationship, so you may be related to Kerry and Bush as well.
