This morning at the coffee shop, the proprietor and I discussed the gender of folding money. "I've noticed that a lot of women fold each bill individually," he said, then threw up his hands, "not to stereotype or anything, I mean, not everybody does this, I just noticed. I wonder if it has to do with purses or something." I assured him that first of all, I had never noticed any such thing but it sure was an interesting observation, and that second of all, the fact that my bills were all separate today was coincidence and laziness and the fact that my pants pockets aren't suited for carrying money around in them.

I never intentionally fold my bills separately, though sometimes I'll end up with two or more batches of folded money in my pocket or coin purse as a result of change I've obtained throughout the day.

However, I do try to keep my bills in numerical order (value, not serial number, I'm not THAT anal) and all facing the same way. (I think the latter habit comes from being a cashier for many years and being told that all of the bills had to be facing the same way when I turned in my drawer at the end of my shift.)

At the end of the day, my wallet has all the bills in it ordered by denomination and facing the same way, with the whole stack folded once crosswise. Usually with the ones on the outside and any larger bills hidden inside, but sometimes not.

My husband, on the other hand, by the end of the day has many little wads in his pockets made up of one or two bills folded up individually. He also doesn't seem to care which pocket - right, left, front, back, whatever.

Did the coffee shop proprietor mention anything he'd noticed about how men handle their bills?

Yes, he said they tended to have theirs smoothed out and unfolded, in the wallet.

I'm in the habit of folding bills separately, because I cannot stand wallets or purses or the like, save as change-carriers - they have functioned best for me in the past as devices for losing or having stolen lots of stuff at once - and bills folded separately are both easier to unobtrusively keep track of loose in a pocket, and if they fall out at least one only loses one at a time. SFAICR my parents and sibs also fold notes separately, which is an even 50/50 gender split.

Playing cards has changed the way I carry money. Now I keep walking-around money folded over in a money clip, with a bill of the smallest denomination on the outside.
