gender moment at lunch:

A man is walking downtown with his kid. The kid, as kids sometimes are, isn't really paying attention to his surroundings and at one point threatens to veer into me as I try to pass the pair.

"Whoa, Henry, watch where you're going -- this man is carrying hot coffee!" (I was carrying a Thai iced tea.)

For some reason, *this* one bugged me.

Can you imagine? Confusing hot coffee for iced tea.

Geez...

Anyone who confuses thai iced tea for hot coffee is even less observant than I am, which I didn't think was possible.

Given that, though, I'd let any other confusion he was experiencing slide. Let him get hot and cold clear first *wry grin*

The beverage confusion was somewhat understandable -- opaque dual-use container plus lid -- except that most folks don't drink coffee with a straw.

Well, if he can't recognize a drink with ice cubes, how could he tell a man from a woman?

i always feel 'not queer enough'

when I get pissed about people mistaking me for a guy. I actually started writing an entry about it a few weeks back, but never finished.

This is a really interesting comment.

I think you should feel more queer -- you're fighting for that in-between space, instead of letting people collapse the world into "girl" and "guy." You're a gender warrior! Go!

OK, I'm half-kidding. But I think that might have been what was irritating me yesterday, in fact. Here I am, collapsed into guy again. If not that, I get girl. I want none of the above. Always have. Always will.

I don't think the majority of the world will ever see me as I want to be seen - Fat Power Femme Dyke. Everyone sees what they want to see.

Hell, I'll take woman. I think being seen as a guy questions my whole internal "am I femme enough?" and the external shit around how I'm actually "not femme enough" to some people. Grrrrr.

I wrestle with my own "not butch enough" stuff, external and internal, too. In that, being mistaken as a guy is validating -- some queers may not think I'm butch enough, but the rest of the world sure does.

But sometimes I just want to sit the world down and say, "Look. I'm female. I'm not hiding it. My tits aren't in a binder. I'm not packing. I'm not *trying* to pass. Can you just accept for the moment that people like me exist, too? Thank you."

Hell, I was wearing a shirt with princess seams yesterday. I shoulda poked the guy's eye out with my nipple.

I always resist the urge to ask "Do men wear DDD push up bras here? Cool!!" I think partly because I'm embarrassed to be seen as a guy. Like "Well, if i were more like the other girls, they wouldn't think I was a man." which is totally mean to myself and beating myself up. Not nice!

What really bugs me is that he named the poor lad "Henry". Sheesh. ;)
