Mar. 29th, 2005 01:35 pm1) The guy behind me at lunch. Older, white-haired. Navy business suit. On the TV, CNN coverage of, you guessed it, the Terry Schiavo vigil. He is discoursing to two younger people, one man, one woman, about many tangential things related to this situation. He is spinning elaborate conspiracy theories and making them sound plausible. He is advocating "conservatism" in the decision on whether or not to remove medical support, but I cannot tell whether this means the feeding tube should stay in, or come out.
At one point, he makes a remark about how juries these days consist of housewives "who would otherwise be watching TV," and it takes all my sense of propriety not to at least whip around and glare at him significantly for a while.
2) On the TV, CNN coverage of the Schiavo case. There is Jesse Jackson. I cannot hear what he is saying because the picture has no sound. I am polishing off another chapter in Can't Stop Won't Stop, which I know you all will be sick of hearing about real soon now. One of the pivotal events of this chapter happens to be Jackson's 1988 campaign for president. And there he is, on the huge plasma screen again. Is it any wonder that I feel trapped in a loop of history sometimes?
