annafdd. I've cut off the last "pick five to pass it onto" thingie and figure anyone else who wants to answer, can.
1. Total number of books I own:
I have no idea. I just roughly estimated 2000-2500. Those are my books and mine alone; since I share an apartment with
imnotandrei, there are a lot more books lying about and in storage.
A friend of ours once estimated our books to weigh at least a ton to a ton and a half. That was two moves ago.
2. Last book I bought:
Steven says "probably a cookbook," in which case it's I Am Almost Always Hungy by Lora Zarubin.
The last book sent to me for free was Plastic Angel, a YA novel by musician Nerissa Nields. I probably won't read it.
3. Last book I read:
Baghdad Without A Map by Tony Horwitz. It's a collection of essays from his stint as a freelance journalist in the Middle East in the early 90's.
4. 5 books that mean a lot to me:
Dada and Surrealism by Robert Motherwell. I read and re-read this obsessively when I was a teenager. No fooling. Dada in particular, as a movement, influenced both my take on art and on politics.
Grimm's Fairy Tales. My parents owned a copy of the 70's Pantheon edition that I understand is rather famous; I don't remember the translator. I do remember the engraving of the loaf of bread, bleeding.
The Dead and the Living by Sharon Olds. I picked this up again last night, read poems like "The One Girl at the Boy's Party," "Sex Without Love," and "Ecstasy," and I was almost in tears.
Wild Seed by Octavia Butler. This is the book that showed me how to tell the other side of the story.
Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev. This may just be my favorite novel ever.
