In the box this week:

cherries
apricots
strawberries
peaches
and a single orange.

(Also a small amount of summer squash, new potatoes, onions, and salad greens. The salad greens and potatoes will be used for tomorrow's dinner.)

So, what do you like to do with summer fruit?

Sorbet. Strawberry champagne or peach champagne would be lovely.

Sorbet is a lovely idea, but a) I have no ice cream maker, and b) I have no freezer space. Someday, though. Someday.

Cut them up, sprinkle just a little sugar over, let sit for a few minutes. The sugar pulls the juice out and makes a nice syrup.

Put varying kinds of dairy product on it: yogurt, sour cream, creme fraiche, heavy cream, whipped cream. Have you tried the new greek-style yogurt or whole-fat yogurt?

I actually have a t-shirt that says, "fruitarian." Mostly, I like to eat summer fruit as is, by the tonne. But smoothies are also good. My favourite ingredients are fruit, nut milk, fresh grated nutmeg, fresh mint leaves, fresh ginger root, fresh lime juice with a bit of the zest. Add a little water and some ice cubes, and puree.

Oooh, that sounds good.

My favorite lazy-ass yuppie smoothie is just orange juice and vanilla goat's milk yogurt.

Kinda like a liquid orange ice-cream popsicle, then. I cook very little without herbs and spices, so it's probably not surprising that my smoothies get mint and nutmeg.

Mostly I just slice them and make fruit salad. My favorite involves strawberries and blackberries, which I sprinkle with Splenda, then add grapes. :)

Yes, eating is the ultimate goal :) But there's way too much here to count on eating out of hand. I'm not so good at that, it turns out.

There's a lovely recipe for cherry-apricot crisp in Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone.
