The time to spend some devoted effort on this new writing project is approaching faster than I expected. The holes in my schedule are not.

The last time I was in this position, I took some dedicated time off, left town, and came back with a lot of work done. (Then some other things happened -- hint: it was early September, 2001 -- and that project got pushed to the side. Oh well.) It was nice. I think I might like to do it again. Maybe sometime in the fall.

But the devil is always in the details, eh?

Thus, a poll:

(My couch isn't exactly in Spain, but the Swedish summer isn't bad either.)

I generally take my writing retreats catsitting in someone else's house or apartment. Preferably someone else with no Internet access. However, a week in a seedy motel with nothing else to do but write is a great idea. If you find one with good rates, let me know. I could use a retreat myself.

A weekend (even a three-day weejend) is not long enough, IMX. In a week, I can go through the transition period, get into the work, get a lot done, and then be ready to come home.

Take your laptop if you write on it. If you don't write on it, leave it home.

(If you do write on it, but it will let you get on the net, take that part out and leave it at home.)

I was kinda kidding about Spain :) Sounds nice, though.

Okay so I'm a little biased on this.

It's always been my ambition to be a kept woman.

Hey, baby, if I could afford to spend the rest of my days lounging on your couch writing in exchange for cooking, you know I would.

I think you missed "my couch is free if you eat".

I think you're right.

Our couch is free whether or not you cook.

Noted with appreciation.

I once took a writer's retreat in... Reno. Loved it. Anonymity, buffets, a comfortable room to lock myself in, and an occasional game of Dance Dance Revolution in the arcade to keep the blood flowing.

P.S.

Take Amtrak out there. Six pretty hours, and you can write in the "view car" if you feel so inclined.

I did a research trip to Reno once and had a great time. It's certainly an option.

Retreat from what?

In that case, pretty much anywhere works. OTOH, if there's more to retreat from, Spain is the best choice.

If I stay at home, I tend to do housework instead of writing. But otherwise, yes, pretty much anywhere works. Also, I am allowed to have friends, visitors, and Internet :) Lucky me!

I'm pretty much the opposite. Housework drives me to do homework.

It's about the only reliable way to get me to do housework :)

and without reading comments, I'll add: make it a library in another place, of course. And take the laptop but not the phone cord.
