My brother finally caught up with me today by phone to wish me a happy birthday. I told him about the homemade pasties Cindy gave me for my birthday.

"Pahsties," he corrected. "Or so it's been drilled into my head by [his wife's] relatives."

"Yeah, yeah, so they say," I said. "As far as I'm concerned, both are correct. And you can pronounce sauna any way you like, too."

The anecdote has more charm if you know that I pronounced the first syllable of "sauna" to rhyme with "cow," but I am utterly at a loss as to how to represent that in text form.

I guess that really depends on how you pronounce "cow," doesn't it?

While the majority of the English-speaking world insists on pronouncing the Finnish steam-bath "saw-na," the originators of the word will undoubtedly insist that it is "sow-na."
