United Methodist Relief collects in-kind (http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/kits.cfm) donations, and requests a check to help with handling. I don't know if they firewall their relief work from the church work.
According to Tom (http://www.backupbrain.com/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/dori/mt-newcomments.cgi?entry_id=4698), the Presbyterians' firewall their relief work from the church work.
For what it's worth, UMCOR does indeed "firewall" their relief work from church work, as you say. As a United Methodist (though, admittedly, a bit lapsed these days), I've always been very proud of how that particular branch of the church works.
