(I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and can say with a certainty that the greater metropolitan area has a very low hipness-per-capita, which is my own little measure of the worldliness of a city. Statistically speaking, the area’s large population of over 5 million means that there’s a liberal element there, but when that’s expressed as a per-person ratio like "hipness-per-capita," not only does Chicago fall way behind the obvious number one city, New York, but it trails smaller yet cooler places like its Midwestern neighbor, Minneapolis. The most comparable locale in terms of "hipness-per-capita," or lack thereof, is Detroit.)
