My gender progression (such as it is) and my genre progression have some
interesting parallels.

I woke up the other day and realized that what I write these days mostly
doesn't really fit squarely into genre (that is, SF/fantasy/horror) boxes.
The genre-friendly reader will recognize it as theirs, but it tends to
lack a certain genre-specific sort of language. I write in a gray zone
between speculative fiction and 'mimetic' fiction.

Similarly, I also tend to write a lot of pieces these days that fall
somewhere in the zone between poetry and prose.

And then, of course, there is the fact that I am writing a lot of stuff
about sex that isn't erotica per se.

Similarly, gender. I am butch but I'm not that kind of butch. I often
don't present the signifiers clearly. People attuned to that sort of thing
tend to pick it up in me anyway. But still, gray zone all the way. What
are you, anyway?

Oh, and let's not talk about how hard it can be to place (sell) my
writing, and most assuredly let's not draw the parallel out genderwise.
