Oct. 17th, 2003 10:50 amThis is a point I am apparently unable to express in 100 words or less (while including other relevant review details), so for the record:
It's not that I dislike light jazz. It's that listening to Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook made me realize why rock and roll was so important, so revolutionary. Midler errs heavily on the side of the novelty tunes and hopes that the camp value will carry them. But it doesn't, not for this ear at least. It's like eating a diet of nothing but sugar and egg whites -- eventually you really crave something more substantial (and with a backbeat). "If this is the way things really were musically by the early 50's [they weren't, I know, but bear with me], no wonder Elvis was so popular" -- this was literally the first thing that popped out of my mouth as I sat down to write the review.
But apparently I cannot express this in 100 words or less without sounding like I'm dissing the whole genre. Maybe I haven't succeeded here, either. I never was a big fan of Rosemary Clooney, but I'm sure that with the right deft touch, someone could make a "songbook" album that I could appreciate. This one wasn't it.
