2) FAMILIAR MEN: A BOOK OF NUDES / SLIDE SHOW AND MEET THE AUTHORS

November 11, 2003, 8 PM
Good Vibrations, 1210 Valencia St. at 23rd, San Francisco

"Familiar Men: A Book of Nudes," is radical. It shows pictures of nude guys. Everyday guys. Guys who look like you and me, or at least you, because listen, darling, the Botox thing? Magic. Can you tell I'm frowning? Me neither. … Healthy male self-imagery? In a photo book? There's a switch. A good one. You can bet your Botox on that. --- Dave Ford, San Francisco Chronicle

Photographer Laurie Toby Edison, with authors Richard F. Dutcher and Debbie Notkin, and several men who modeled for Familiar Men: A Book of Nudes will appear on November 11, 2003 at Good Vibrations. They will speak about these compelling portraits and the impact they have on body, self image, and sexuality. Prints from the book from the book will be on exhibition there from November 10th to February 28th.

In Laurie Toby Edison’s style of inclusive photography, the models collaborate with the photographer to create a relaxed, comfortable portrait. Nowhere is this unique approach to portrait photography more transgressive, more powerful, or more attractive than in the photographer’s body of nude portraits of men.

Opportunities to see nude portraits of a variety of men are disturbingly rare. By revealing men as they are - old and young, fat and thin, varied in race, class and ethnicity - Edison provides a new kind of permission for all men to accept themselves as attractive, sensual beings. The men photographed include college professors, performance artists, high-school teachers, radio personalities, warehouse workers, and more. The most recent comprehensive exhibition of these photographs was at the National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, as a part of a 100-photograph retrospective of Edison’s work. A selected exhibit is currently on view in 301 Gallery at the LGBT Center, 1800 Market, San Francisco, through October 31, 2003.

.Jaime Cortez, of the Galeria de la Raza, says:

"Masculinity is far more exquisite and fine than femininity. Women can count on the astounding elasticity they have built into femininity. Only with serious, sustained effort can a woman rupture it. The delicate filigree structure of masculinity, in contrast, splinters at the slightest strain."

Familiar Men: A Book of Nudes includes 60 fine-art black & white
photographs, an essay on masculinity by Richard F. Dutcher and Debbie Notkin, and an introduction by masculinity theorist Michael Kimmel. The book is available from SHIFTING FOCUS PRESS for $25.00. Edison and Notkin’s previous book, Women En Large: A Book of Fat Nudes, in its ninth year in print, is an international small press bestseller.
