This is mostly a note to myself, but people are always welcome to chime in with suggestions.

In the box this week:

Due to frost, we received mostly storage vegetables. Things are going to be sparse the next few weeks.

Oranges (a lot!)
Apples
Two leeks
Broccoli
Pistachios
Two sweet potatoes, one large, one small
One big grapefruit

In the "pantry" (fridge or counter), please use soon:

Cabbage
Butternut squash
Delicata squash

Notes:

For once, I am feeling like working with the sweetness of squash instead of against it. A soup, then, I think, of squash and pears or squash and apples? Or we could experiment with squash and banana soup (I also have a bunch of bananas about to go bad)? Or would that be too much? (Sounds like a yummy curry, though.) Broccoli on the side?

I may need to go to the farmer's market for green things. I was going to make quail salad this week (quail in the freezer), but now, should I hold off? Should I make the spare ribs (also in the freezer) instead? When? Busy weekend...but doesn't Chinese-style spare ribs and a cabbage side dish sound yummy for the cold weather? Will it still be cold by this weekend?

The leeks are destined for Steven's tart.

I haven't made this, but have had it saved in my 'looks yummy' file for a while now.. http://www.cooksrecipes.com/soup/curried-butternut-soup-with-diced-pear-recipe.html

I've made curried butternut squash soup in the past, and loved it. The recipe I used was very similar to the one that someone else posted, but it used apples rather than pears, didn't have yogurt, and was served hot.

Great minds think alike. So, apparently, do ours.

More or less. After all, they broke up already.

Sweet Adeline's sometimes has a yummy pastry that appears to be just mashed butternut squash (perhaps lightly sweetened, but maybe not, and definitely a light touch on any spices) wrapped in a pastry shell. It's SO good. I'm thinking of doing some with puff pastry next time I buy winter squash.

Nothing to do with box contents

Have you heard about the Pillow Fight League? They are in Toronto, and expanding into New York.

I had heard of them, actually, but thank you for the link (which, apparently, I must look at at home).
