The gay porn producers I have known have to compete with the larger production houses where making films is much more affordable. If you check out most of the jock films they are much cheaper, anything with more of a fetish is more expensive. Those fetish films have to stay a little more underground due to the new anti porn legislation and the anti porn task force that was pulled together by taking agents off the anti al queda search. While they might be a little more underground, they then have to spend money in other more creative ways to reach their audience. This might mean sending the entire cast to International Mr Leather, paying for flights, hotel rooms, stipend etc. The sales will cover the cost, but then you have to charge more for the video. Gay men do and will pay more for videos. Het men won't. Ok, back to work, but I do have more to say. (of course, lol)
Hm. I don't actually see a big price point difference between the more mainstream movies and the fetish movies. It was looking at one of Falcon's new releases and boggling at the $70 price tag that prompted this post, for example.
residual societal-induced guilt about consuming porn makes a consumer base that won't (as a class) band together to complain about prices and probably, subconsciously, feels the need to pay a sin tax. Porn mags, especially fetish mags, are traditionally a lot more expensive than regular mags also.
