What makes a memoir "frothy"?

Oh, I don't know. I am thinking of books like Julie and Julia, or in this case The Year of Yes, both of which happen to be books in which some young NY woman commits to some arbitrary and silly-sounding project for a year (making every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking; saying "yes" to every person who asks her out). They know the project is a bit absurd, they know that they themselves are a bit neurotic and silly and a bit too NY, but they do it anyway, to see where it takes them, and the openness and surprise is the fun part of reading the book(s).
