May. 23rd, 2007 09:56 amI am having a little trouble with my current book, My Horizontal Life: A collection of One Night Stands by stand-up comedian Chelsea Handler.
I think I would like it better if at least one of her one-night stands a) wasn't fueled by alcohol, b) wasn't with someone "exotic," like a black man or a midget, c) the sex was actually good (and she could remember it...) and d) it didn't end with some humiliation on her part or his, often centered around penis size (too big, too small), hygiene and/or bodily functions (hers and his), or blackouts.
Oh, wait. There's the "dumb" male stripper. Silly me. (Does he count as exotic? Probably.)
Why am I still reading it? Well, I am a sucker, and the concept is entertaining enough that I keep hoping it will get better. Also, Handler *is* funny. Not sensitive, not reflective, not even a smidge, but, yes, funny. And the book is breezily written and easy to read. So there's that. And maybe I can count it as research, in the "I can do better than that!" category.
I looked at some reviews of this book, and now I feel kinda like a snob. Humor is lovely, but I guess I wanted a book that wasn't *just* playing it for laughs.
