Nov. 22nd, 2003 03:56 pmMore holiday food memories: Xmas Eve at my grandmother's was all about Brown's Chicken and orange jello salad. I helped her shop for and make that salad, once. I loved it and its little mandarin oranges. I loved Brown's Chicken, too. Mmmm, Brown's Chicken, definitely a regional specialty.
The meal was served buffet style on the kitchenette table, and we ate it on TV dinner foldout tables. Yeah.
An non-food holiday memory: Every 4th of July, we went out to the fields behind Meridian Mall to have a picnic, hang out, and, once the sun set, watch the fireworks. My father never went along on these gatherings (he's crowd-phobic), so it was just Mom and the kids. There was a historic farmhouse exhibit nearby, and the Meridian Township municipal building, which was sometimes unlocked, at least during the day. And other things to keep us occupied until it was time for the fireworks proper, but I can't remember what they were.
Those fields no longer exist; it's just more mall, and subdivisions now.
Oh, and while we're at it, turkey dinner in my household, no matter what the occasion, always consisted of: dinner rolls (bought premade but unbaked), mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, stuffing, canned cranberry sauce (jelly style), and a rotating vegetable. When I was younger it was often creamed corn; nowadays it's usually something green. Dessert is always pumpkin and apple pie with Cool Whip.
That's about it for holidays and family, except for birthdays. My favorite holiday, of course, was always Halloween, but that's another story. Mom's not keen on Halloween, and Dad's not big on any holidays at all, Halloween is a personal story, not a family reminiscence. We also celebrated secular Easter, with the usual egg dyeing and hiding (each kid also got a basket full of candy) and then the ritual foods of egg salad and creamed egg on toast for a week or so afterward.
