I spent eighteen or so hours yesterday getting from Madison, Wisconsin, to Oakland, California. I did not fly on either of my two original flights, and I only landed in one of my two original destinations. There was also a several-hour unplanned bus trip in the middle there. In fact, I didn't get on my first plane until twelve hours after I woke up in the morning.
But at least I got to sleep at home last night. There was definitely some question as to whether that was going to happen. I almost ended up stranded in Madison, Chicago, and Sacramento, at various times during the day.
My reward?
I'm at work today.
On the plus side: the pastries, cider, and cheese I packed seem to have survived intact.
No stone fruit at the farmer's market -- the board at Cafe Soleil said this was the last week of cherry season, and I certainly didn't see a trace of them anywhere else -- but a whole lot of heirloom apples. I brought some of those home, too.
My absent hosts were beyond gracious.
I got a dose of thunder and lightning.
I finished several good books. (I almost ran out!)
