Thirty-five pounds of porn DVDs landed on my doorstep yesterday. And that's only the first batch. Yep, it's time for the AVN Awards. I will be spending most of the week parked in front of the TV, finger on the fast forward.

Why yes, I do forward through the sex scenes rather than the plot, now that you bring it up.

How can you review videos without watching them?

I don't have to review this batch, I have to judge them. Which of course begs the same question.

The short answer is, I can tell without watching both all the way through that Disc A is going to be better than Disc B. And once I've made that determination, I can stop watching Disc B and toss in Disc C.

It's kinda like sorting through the editorial slush pile. You watch the beginning, take a peek at the middle, and maybe look at the end to make sure you didn't miss anything.

I recently decided that porn is a little like Kraft mac and cheese. It's cheap and dumb, but I want it anyhow. Then I feel embarrassed by liking something that I think is cheap and dumb. But I have some every now and then.

Most mainstream porn (what a phrase!) is produced exactly with the fast food aesthetic -- cheap, quick, and in quantity. So your comparison is really quite apt. A lot of people who feel ambivalent about porn (like me, heh) are really unhappy with the fast food part, not the sex part.

The Magazine in SF will buy used porn (vids, DVDs, and of course magazines). Also, Craig's List and Ebay have been very productive in this regard in the past.
