Somehow I went to Ferry Plaza for lunch today and managed to avoid buying anything except my lunch! Even the truffle honey that I presume is a close relative of the delicious stuff I had on Sunday. Not to mention all the pretty-smelling soaps.

I am in the market for honey, btw. Anything but Greek thyme honey. Lay it on me -- anyone have favorites, recommendations?

well... I only have about 30 kinds of honey in my cabinet. You know I collect, right? My gradad was a beekeeper. A few weeks ago, I tried sap honey for the first time -- not from pollen -- sap! The Redwood forest honey is really good - my brother and boyfriend did not like it, but a coworker really liked it a lot.

Star thistle and wildflower honey are always nice. I really like some of the acacia honey I have had from Japan. Tupelo honey is always a nice choice. Mmmm- chestnut honey.

Depends on how you like your honey, really.

There's an awesome honey store in Sebastopol, btw - www.beekind.com

a honey collection?!! I have a jam collection!

I like the Hawaiian white hony Rainbow stocks. And I haven't opened it yet, but I am looking forward to Manuka honey from New Zealand. I also have some Lehua honey from Hawaii that's interesting. my favorite local is the star thistle from Marshall.

if you know where I can get the honey that tastes like pine needles, let me know...

I now have a jam collection, too, thanks to presents from abroad, plus my friends who are June Taylor fans and are moving to Bangalore and cleaning out their pantry...

I love jam - I used to keep a lot of jam in my fridge but the thing is -- it doesn't keep very long. Even if it isn't growing visible mold, you shouldn't keep jam once it has been opened, longer than a month or so (speaking as someone who does canning). Now I just go through a jar at a time.

That said, you *can* freeze most jams -- you can open a jar, put half in a ziplock and freeze it for later.

In her (really) old age, my grandmother used to freeze her jams instead of canning them.

I'm a honey slut. :) I think at the very least I could use a good dark honey, and a light sweet honey too.

No, I didn't know you collect!

Well, consider yourself invited over for a honey tasting. Maybe we could watch "The Bees" or something. :)

if you can find buckwheat honey it's almost black sometimes. also if you like the truffle stuff, try chestnut honey-- also very strong.

(btw truffle oil is a manufactured scent, a perfume, not a flavor derived from a natural source.)

I have a whole rant on truffle oil, actually, that my loved ones have been privy to more than once.

But that doesn't change the fact that I was distinctly enamoured of the stuff at the party. Maybe it will be a dirty, shameful affair between us. Maybe you will find me someday in dirty clothes, hair unwashed, with a glazed look in my eye and honey smeared on the corners of my mouth. I know she's a painted lady, but she's still pretty sweet.

Creamy honey for eating on toast with butter? Really Raw Honey (brand name), purchaseable at Rainbow. For some reason, it's the most delicious creamy honey evar.
