Someone please deconstruct this ad campaign for Svedka Vodka for me. Thanks.

Wow. It makes no sense.

Vodka makes you an irresistible Bjork-bot-there it is, clear as day:)

I've seen the "mainstream" Svedka Vodka ads ("Combat global warming. Add more ice.") and I more or less get them. It's the gay angle, plus fembot, that I am not grokking. How is this supposed to sell vodka to gay guys (clearly the intent), again?

Hmmm...is there perhaps a huge untapped gay male fembot robofetish crowd that deeply needs their own brand of booze? Or that Svedka is trying to create this market? (Or it's a subversive ploy to get robofetishes everywhere.)

(besides, I don't quite get the fashion thing since the robot is, well, as nude as a robot can be. This will keep critical theorists busy for years:))

that's what the ads say.

Yeah, but that's what all booze ads say.

But sometimes they say "Yay masculinity! Buy more booze!"

(And sometimes it's just "Yay booze! Buy more booze!")

Which reminds me... but I'll take it over to my own LJ. Watch for the one that mentions Eddie, sweetie darling.

The kind of masculinity they are going "yay" about, I consider more or less synonymous with "yay misogyny!" but I've always been that kind of gal.

(blowing smoke from my butt....)

It isn't trying to hit the niche market of pervy gay male fanciers of fembots. It's not going for the intersection of the sets, it's going for their union.

As you know, Lori, Robofetishism is one of those perversions that dare not speak their names that began to be recognized when the Internet made it possible for the people who mistakenly thought they were unique to find each other.

Or maybe some perv in the ad agency saw an opportunity to put their unspeakable desires into an edgy campaign, and it struck a nerve with the client.

"I am a pervert's sex object. You, too, are a pervert. Therefore we'll bond, and you will buy my vodka." Makes as much sense as anything.

My guess? It's intentionally confusing.
Add "gay" and get "controversy" and attention.

And here my guess was that they were lazy and overbudget and so decided to repurpose the fembot without redesigning her to be a gaybot. "Slap a little incoherent copy on her and it'll be fine!"

This was my guess, after lunchtime discussion.

"Hey, , we need to hit gay magazines with these ads. Go get us some by next week. Oh, yeah, and we don't have any more money for photos, so here's the leftover footage from our other ads."

Though I still think the slogan should have been:

"After three shots of our vodka, straight guys will think you look like this."

Way too edgy. And funny. Very funny. But too edgy. Too bad.

It's working the multiple association pattern, trying to create something that reminds people of many things, plus draws the eye just naturally. Fembot looks very much like the I, Robot bots, so you pull in association with major motion picture advertising. Plus it's sexy, for some definition of sexy, and therefore draws attention. White smooth body suggests, but doesn't give nudity. Gay fashion sense gets controversy, plus association with Queer Eye.

Plus, y'know, there's the whole "fags have better fashion sense than anyone else" thing.

Please to note that I am making this comment without having seen the advertising campaign in question, nor, in fact, most advertisements for booze.

Oh, and let us not forget "I'm a gay man trapped in a fem(x) body" means "So I take it up the ass."
